The Hobart Comedy Festival sounds exciting and exotic – and it is. But
it is VERY small. It is a programmed Festival (we choose the
participants) and it runs for only ten days or so.
There are never more than two events per day – always at two different
times so as not to split the tiny available audience. That means no
two events happen simultaneously. The town’s population just cannot
sustain two comedy things at once – period. The small audiences are
due to Tasmania’s small population and to the fact that the event is
in January when there is so much going on in Tasmania with cultural
activities, sport and entertainment. It is not like Melbourne or
Edinburgh with multiple shows in multiple venues. In Hobart, the
majority of the acts appear on the one bill together in ten-minute
slots. Big name guests may get to do their own show, but the majority
will appear together on the one bill, even the big guns.
For the record, Hobart’s population is less than 200,000 people. Do
not send us a rationale for your own seven-night run at a venue. We
will ignore you because we know this unique, tiny market and you do
not.
Due to the factors outlined above, we only import a handful of
participants from beyond the pool available within Tasmania.
Do not be disheartened – we still DO import an occasional participant.
We usually cover airfare and accommodation, sometimes just
accommodation.
Some people fly themselves here; sleep on a friend’s couch and all for
maybe one or two ten minute spots in a show. And the event is entirely
profit share. So they do it for maybe $47.53 if they are lucky.
